Abstract
Design criteria of coherent optical fiber communication system were discussed and investigated. First, the different types of optical fibers (waveguides) were discussed. Then the laser sources, photo-detectors, transmitter & receiver circuits were discussed in detail.
Design criteria of conventional intensity modulated (direct detection) optical fiber communication system were discussed. Then, the design criteria and estimation of number of photons for different modulation schemes for coherent optical fiber communication system were analyzed.
Coherent optical fiber communication system's advantages and drawbacks were discussed in detail. Improvement in receiver sensitivity of coherent detection compare with conventional direct detection was investigated. Finally, some receiver designs (like balanced mixer heterodyne & polarization state independent receivers) were also investigated.
