Abstract
Data Communications systems consist of distributed software and hardware components executing concurrently a number of communications functions. The logical framework for these functions is called data communication architecture and is layered hierarchically according to the OSI model. The protocol defines the syntax and semantics of the communications between entities of the same layer. NETEXPERT: An Expert system described here contains a set of formal specifications corresponding to different abstractions level of the protocol. On the highest level there is a specification of the service provided by this protocol. On the consecutive lower levels there are successive refinements of this specification down to the specification of an elementary communications procedure. The complexity of data communication systems and distribution of their components make fault detection and diagnosis very tedious and expensive. Even partial computerization of these tasks could be very profitable in terms of time, user satisfication, and money. With the fast technological progress in data communications, new systems are being installed while the previous ones are still being used. Due to this, the maintenance expertise of the older systems may be forgotten by experts moved to the development of the newer system. Encoding and storing this expertise with the help of artificial intelligence techniques like expert systems could prevent this loss.
