Abstract

It is the intent of this thesis to develop design concept of a MHD-Synchronous generator for generation of A-C electric power utilizing the exhaust divertor plasma of Tokomak fusion reactor.

The main physical structure of the MHD-Synchronous generating system consists of (1) a linear induction accelerator at the divertor channel to accelerate the plasma velocity sufficient enough to provide rotational effect on the exhaust cylinder by turbine action; (2) a D-C field coil as a source of magnetic field at the entrance of the exhaust chambers; (3) turbine blade on the upper portion of the cylindrical current sheet and (4) the cylindrical current sheet is surrounded by conventional three-phase winding, wound around an iron cylindrical shell serving as a synchronous generator.

The linear induction accelerator is of heavy ion core type and is designed based on existing technological consideration.

The properties of fusion plasma at the divertor channel has been reviewed analytically and solutions for the flow field equations are obtained. These equations link the plasma flow and the turbine input.

The turbine design is based on a single-stage impulse type turbine blading. However, consideration is given for high temperature material to withstand impinging high temperature plasma.

The induced magnetic field and induced current equations have been derived by earlier researchers and these equations have been used to investigate the wave patterns of the induced magnetic field. The x-component of the induced magnetic is considered to link the three-phase winding. It has been established in Reference 5 that the alteration of polarities among the super conductors will lead to total neutralization of Y-component of induced magnetic field and that complete alignment of the lines of force is along the direction of flow of the exhaust plasma. The induced magnetic field was found to be rectangular in shape when plotted against the angle 0. This rectangular wave was expanded in Fourier series and equivalent periodic waves with different harmonics.

The three-phase winding is designed where power would be generated by synchronous generator principle. The design approach has been reviewed carefully so that harmonic effect other than the fundamental becomes minimal. Finally, equivalent circuits are constructed to investigate the performance of the generator. Both the cylindrical and salient pole machines are considered.

Certain assumptions have been made in calculating the design ratings of the major equipment, namely, the accelerator, turbine and the electrical generator. Heat balance and plasma information have been taken from existing available data for Tokomak reactor.
