Abstract

This thesis is intended to provide the reader with a background in the development of modern day portable data terminals / computer systems. In order to accomplish this, some background will be provided to familiarize the reader with the evolution of computer systems. This will enable the reader to become familiar with the fast pace at which these computer systems have developed within only the last several years.

This thesis will include a description of the design, development, and implementation of these computer systems. The thesis will include a description of the way the many pieces of such a sophisticated system fit together. It will explain what each section of the system does and what part it plays in the overall scheme of things. As apart of this description, a cost / benefit analysis of such a computer system will also be provided.

In summary, the thesis will describe how these types of computer systems can be applied to the field service force of a company. Also included will be a list of additional applications for this product in the near future, with some possible applications that may occur in the distant future. Along with this, an explanation of the efficiencies that a company may derive through the use of such a computer system is also presented.
