Abstract

This paper explores the current state of transmedia storytelling, that is, the art of developing a cohesive narrative through a variety of media. Using Dungeons & Dragons as a case study, this study explores the complex nature of current forms of transmedia storytelling, as well as the complex relationships between media producers and consumers that have arisen due to this narrative technique. Focusing in three specific examples within the franchise: Drizzt Do'Urden, the Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon series and the 2023 film Honor among Thieves, our analysis illustrate the fact that current media franchises are constituted by a multitude of media, narrative spaces, and even merchandise. To be successful, these franchises must rely on media mix strategies that create a narrative system that cannot be completely consumed in any individual text. Current forms of transmedia storytelling, the paper proposes, also focus on the creation of transmedia characters and transmedia worlds capable not only of connecting to media consumers but also flexible enough to allow their participation in the creation of the never-ending world of Dungeons and Dragons.
