Abstract

One of the main problems existing among workers and applicants to the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) area is the lack of development of what they call "Soft Skills", prioritizing only their technical knowledge. The ICT sector has a strategic role and for more than 10 years Chile has been identified as one of the main nations that would have a growth in the region in this area, attributing to it a role in the better profitability of companies, better insertion into the globalized world, promoting entrepreneurship and better governance at the country level. Research carried out during the last decades has shown that people's success does not depend only on their academic skills and knowledge management, but that social and emotional skills play an important role. New social transformations and diversifications require individuals to deploy new ways of thinking and relating, to possess the ability to trust and cooperate with others, and the flexibility and capacity to adapt to changes as they occur. The development of social and emotional skills not only influences the well-being of individuals, but of society as a whole. By "Soft Skills", we refer to a broad set of components such as attitude, skills, habits and practices that can be combined to maximize the effectiveness of one's work, and which in this context are considered as or more important than traditional qualifications and technical skills in terms of professional success. In the case of this research, limited to four concepts: Teamwork, Empathy, Adaptability, Leadership. In Chile, the incorporation of soft skills to formal education is a relevant problem, since insufficiencies have been identified from preschool levels, the entire school educational process, higher education including specifically the university preparation of teachers. Therefore, it is unlikely that applicants to the ICT sector have these skills developed beforehand and it forces companies to hire or implement courses or training to enhance this economic sector. Regarding the implementation of role-playing games for the development of soft skills, it has already been tested in educational and community experiences, where the installation of role-playing game clubs or workshops has as an adjacent consequence the development of "soft skills". We found few antecedents in the organizational environment, most of them are given by reports and mentoring and coaching processes. Most of the applications of games have been along the lines of "Serious Games", where the objective is education (in its multiple forms) not entertainment. Our bet is that the game in its own practice and design, enhances the development of "soft skills" in the participants. At the time of this summary the results have not been analyzed, but our proposal for the colloquium is to present our main conclusions and reflections.
