Abstract
The investment making decision for welding machinery or the selection of an economic welding process is ccmplex due to the associated indirect expenses. For conventional evaluations certain cost elements can be disregarded since they are affected equally by competing alternatives. When considering welding equipment or calculating welding costs or selecting a welding process, the indirect costs assume a significant proportion and such factors must be carefully examined.
In this paper an attempt has been made to highlight the procedure for economic justification for welding machinery and the procedure for calculating the total weld costs. The calculation of such variables as, labor cost, flux cost, electrode cost, overhead cost, power cost, and shielding gas cost in the total welding cost are presented in a systematic and organized way. The paper also discusses the indirect cost associated with welding and a list for minimizing the total welding costs. A case study has been provided to illustrate the various steps involved in arriving at the investment making decision for welding machinery. In the process of doing this, various welding processes have been studied, and and linked together in a coordinated and organized manner to provide a reasonable understanding of the subject.
