Abstract
This study applied Vroom's instrumentality-valence model to an assessment of the overall job attitude of hourly workers at a food processing plant. The specific job factors relating to the formation of overall job attitude are described and the managerial implications of the results are discussed. A short discussion of the relationship of these employees' attitudes to Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory is also presented.
The results of the study indicate a moderate degree of job satisfaction based on Vroom's model. Additionally, the correlations of specific instrumentality to specific valence give a strong indication that the subjects value rewards they perceive as attainable, supporting Herzberg's concept of the assembly-line organization.
