Abstract
Alternatives to present a workable and cost effective solution(s) to the inadequate supply of public transportation during the peak hour periods in Greater Georgetown (Guyana) are examined. Various transportation system management strategies that could help in either to service the peak period demands by more effective utilization of available transport resources or to manage these demands by altering peaks patterns, are discussed. Data from the transportation study aspect of the "Physical Plan for Greater Georgetown", conducted by the Central Housing and Planning Authority as well as data from the files of the Central Transport Planning Unit of the Ministry of Transport (Guyana) are used. The transportation survey was conducted during February 1981 to July 1981 and the author has had the privilege to be involved in most of the data collection for that survey.
Saving potentials do exist, both in terms of operating costs and foreign (overseas) costs as well as staving off capital investment, if a concerted effort is made towards managing peak demands and providing a complex package of integrated service arrangements, utilizing all transport resources (buses, hire cars, private automobiles, etc.), which in their ensemble will allow full area wide mobility for the many kinds of people and travel needs within the region.
