Abstract
The effective treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes is one of the most urgent problems facing the State of New Jersey today. New Jersey is the most densely populated state and is a leader in industry. Nearly every major industry in the nation is represented by one or many production units all of which generate copious amounts of hazardous and toxic wastes each year. Although the state has the toughest rules and regulations on the management of hazardous waste, there are very few options exercised or facilities cited for the effective treatment and disposal of wastes within the state boundaries. A number of surveys (1) and (2) by both goveLlnaent and private organizations have been conducted in the last couple years to describe the quantity, location and characteristics of wastes in the State of New Jersey. It is the purpose of this thesis to combine data from the above mentioned surveys and use it to provide recommendations for the siting of new waste disposal technologies and facilities. The study comprised of a review of the data provided by respondents to the New Jersey Research and Development Council, it reorganization into information tables centered around the location and generating industry type and a comparison of the quantity of waste surveyed to the total waste generated in the State as reported to the New Jersey Hazardous Waste Siting Commission. Finally, the incinerable waste types in New Jersey, based on study results were demonstrated along with recommendation for the new waste disposal locations sited by the New Jersey Hazardous Waste Facilities Siting Commission (HWFSC).
