Abstract

This report describes the analysis and testing of two types of exterior beam-column joints conducted at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The testing program consisted of six beam column joints with varying strength cementing agents in the joint region: normal, high strength and polymer concrete. Half of the specimens contained 1.5 percent by volume of hooked end fibers. The study of the behavior of these beam column joints has indicated 2 cases of failures: a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by bending and, a critical region in which the inelastic behavior was controlled by high shear.

From the analysis of the test results, it can be concluded that the Polymer concrete used in the joint region provided:

1- better bond between matrix. and reinforcement

2- better confinement in the joint region

3- a stiffer member

4- a higher moment capacity

5- a higher shear strength

6- more ductility

7- far less cracking

8- a significant improvement of the energy dissipation capability than normal and high strength concrete.
