Abstract
Although methacrylic acid is the simplest unsaturated carboxylic acid and its hydroxyl ester polymerize readily, yielding useful resins, no adequate study of the preparation and application of the higher hydroxyl alkyl methacrylates has been published. The commercially important hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl methacrylates are manufactured from the appropriate alcohol in the presence of sulfuric acid, a method which appears to be less suitable for production of higher hydroxyl alkyl methacrylates. The purpose of the present work was to prepare the hydroxyhexyl methacrylate (HHMA) by a generally applicable method and determine its common physical properties. In addition, the urethane methacrylates were synthesized from HHMA, TDI, pentaerythritol and three phenolic blocking agents. All the products were characterized by melting point, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and NMR spectra. The bonding of these materials to dentin slices was also investigated. It was found that bond strength of HHMA was weaker than HEMA in these adhesive materials. The tensile strengths of the hydroxyhexyl methacrylate in these adhesive materials are consistent with the results of the previous work in that the tensile strengths of the polymeric n-alkyl methacrylates decrease with increasing molecular weight to the dodecyl ester and then increase.
