Abstract
In this study dental adhesives synthesised from TDI/HHMA/pentaerythritol, with either of the blocking agents namely eugenol, o-methoxyphenol, p-cresol or o-chlorophenol were tested. Bond strengths in dentin as influenced by spacer molecules were tested. Comparison studies to determine this were performed using the same blocking agents and TDI/HEMA/pentaerythritol. The effects of i. post-extraction time and ii. dentin depth on bond-strengths were tested using two monomers: o-methoxyphenol/ TDI/HEMA/pentaerythritol and p-cresol/TDI/HEMA/pentaerythritol 1. From teeth recently extracted (2h) vs dentin aged from one to six months 2. From dentin cut from three different levels within the tooth.
The prepared dentin-adhesive samples were stored in physiological saline solution for 24 h and the specimens were pulled to failure in a Scott testing machine. The data were analysed by a 2 by 3 factorial ANOVA at 5% confidence levels.
There was no significant difference between 'New' and 'Old' dentin, nor between first-cut dentin (i.e. closest to occlusal) and last cut (closest to pulp). The aged dentin had higher bond strengths for p-cresol/ TDI/ HEMA/ pentaerythritol. The EMA group yielded higher bond strengths for all of the blocking agents tested, compared to the HHMA. Mean bond strengths for the HEMA group were approximately 2000 psi and for the HHMA group were approximately 600 psi. Post-treatment of adhesive samples with glutaraldehyde was also studied and it was found that the glutaraldehyde had no effect on samples subjected to a 24 h post-treatment period time, nor was there a marked difference between 24 h and 48 h glutaraldehyde post-treated samples.
