Abstract

With recent trends in computer technology, its application to the construction industry is attracting more attention. The cost of owning computer was a primary reason for small and medium sized firms not adopting its use. With the advent of micro and minicomputers, the cost have dropped dramatically. Now one can purchase an Apple Computer (the monitor, keyboard, disk drive, and printer) at less than $3,000. This makes it possible for students like me (the poverty class) to afford to own one.

This thesis explores the powerful potentials of the microcomputer and its use as an aid in construction layout. Surveying programs are developed in BASIC language. These programs have been tested and found to be effective in teaching elementary surveying in Newark College of Engineering. Its application in construction layout will help the engineer or surveyor to reduce field data help increase the level of accuracy on construction layout and improve productivity.

The basic principles involved in the development of each program (and limitations where applicable) are explained in detail. The author encourages the reader to try to develop his own programs in areas not covered thereby in contributing to the technological advances in Civil Engineering.
