Abstract
In the recent years, there have been some changes in the American corporate life. These changes have been occasioned by some external factors which adversely affect the profitability of the companies. In order to address this problem, many corporations have resorted to cutbacks which more often than not, affect a great bulk of the human resources.
The purpose of this study therefore, is to explore the strategies which companies could use, rather than lay off, during business downturns; and still remain competitive and profitable.
Chapter one of this study focuses on what companies should do to help the affected workers when lay off is done as the last resort. No doubt, laid off workers encounter both psychological and economic problems. So, if they are let go without adequately taking good care of them, they may involve the company in unexpected great financial loss.
Chapter two and three are extensive surveys of what some companies which have full employment policies do to survive the bad business times. While Chapter four briefly compares the Japanese lifetime employment with the American system. The comparison points out that while there is a measure of lifetime employment in the U.S., it cannot be extensively practised as in Japan because of the cultural differences between the two countries.
