Abstract
The consumption of energy by an HVAC system in a high rise office building was investigated by comparing results obtained from ASEAM and Trakload (two microcomputer programs) with the manual calculations and DOE-2 (Department of Energy Program) results obtained by Tishman Research Corporation. The study was performed on the Public Service Building of Newark, New Jersey. It is a 26 story office building, designed to be energy efficient.
The results obtained show that, the energy consumed by the HVAC system is a substantial amount of the total energy used but the controlling factors are electrical lighting and equipment. Both of these factors influence the cooling load directly. Electrical lighting energy was more than double and the equipment energy was almost equal to the the cooling system energy.
If somehow a saving in electrical lighting and equipment energies could be accomplished it would benefit the energy conservation two fold, one by saving electrical lighting and equipment energy and second by lowering the cooling energy.
