Abstract

It was the purpose of this investigation to develop an experimental Procedure which would allow the prediction of the variation of fraction void with varying liquid and solid rates from a minimum number of experiments carried out in simple apparatus. This procedure should allow prediction for both smooth and rough particles, and should be valid for several different shapes. The data collected can be plotted on a single chart showing the relation between fraction void, solids throughput, and liquid throughput for all vertical particle fluid systems. Such a method was suggested by Mertes and Rhodes1 in their work developing a unified theory for particle-fluid systems, where the particles studied were mainly smooth spheres.

The procedure, based on the gathering of fluidization-sedimentation data and using an equation proposed by Mertes and Rhodes, was found to be lacking in statistical precision: unless difficult experimental methods were followed. Such methods would negate the aim and usefulness of the procedure, The conceptual scheme proposed by these authors for visualizing, by a single chart, Fig 2, the interrelation between the several solid-liquid systems was found to be a valid qualitative mathematical description for the chart.
