Abstract
Discrimination against women in the workplace has always existed, but because few women in the United stated worked until the Second World War, it was not regarded as a major issue before then. Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids employer and union discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, many available studies still showed that most women experienced discrimination in employment, especially in salary and promotion. In addition, there were a growing number of cases of sexual harassment in the workplace. This study was concerned with the implementation and effectiveness of legislation protecting women against discrimination in employment in the United States. Theoretically, legislation has already been enact, but in practice it leaves much room for improvement.
The main research tools used. in this study was the literature survey on women's employment participation, circumstances of sex discrimination and the relevant precedents in the courts. At the end, the purpose of this study is to arouse public awareness of sex discrimination and to prevent future discrimination and to build a really equal society.
