Abstract

This study was performed to explore the possibility of using the sludge waste from the water treatment plant at Boonton New Jersey as a containment material for the sanitary landfills or as a fill material. At present natural clay is being used as a containment liner for the landfills and by using this sludge, recycling of a waste product will be achieved in an economical manner.

As a first part of this studies, efforts were made to utilize the liquid sludge having a solid content of about 3%. Attempts to dewater the liquid sludge to a workable mix by adding additives such as sorbond and lime were found to be not economical as large quantities of additives were required.As a second part of the studies, sludge cake having about 200% water content was utilized. Dewatering sludge cake by electro-osmosis was found to be unsuccessful. Addition of 30% sorbond by weight to the sludge cake and air drying for 4 days gave a workable mix for compaction purposes. Determination of hydraulic conductivity by consolidation tests and by flexible wall permeameter gave a value in the range of 3.0-4.4x10-8 cm/s.

Other tests to determine as to whether the sludge-sorbond mix meets the requirements set forth by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for sanitary landfill liners were conducted. The results indicate that the sludge-sorbond mix can be compacted in the field provided the mix was allowed to dry for 4 days and that it can be used as sanitary landfill liner.
