Abstract
This report has been prepared as a guide in the formation, generation, sampling methodology, control and treatment of leachate from solid waste sites. Presented are definitions of the major types of solid waste disposal systems and an overall view of the fact that groundwater is currently used by a large percentage of Americans. Discussed are the processes by which leachate is formed at solid waste land disposal sites, including a discussion of the hydrolic cycle as it pertains to leachate formation. Methods to estimate the quantity of leachate produced at a particular site are also presented. The control and treatment of leachate from solid waste land disposal facilities is broadly discussed. A discussion of the possible types of leachate damage is presented with actual case histories of sites affected by leachate.
