Abstract
A local area network is planned for use in the NJIT Computer & Information Science Department. This facility will support basic C. S. research as well as provide a testbed for engineering applications. The implementation of the LAN is based on an existing, well-developed microcomputer lab along with a VAX 11/780, a PDP 11/34, LSI 11 systems, and numerous terminals and microcomputers. A phased development plan takes advantage of the modular nature of LAN's. Initial projects will consist of a lab for exploring transfers of C. S. technology to engineering work, an integrated document preparation lab addressing the needs of technical authors, and software projects for custom graphics capabilities. Two practical objectives are to find ways to increase productivity among researchers and to develop more effective ways to deliver C. S. training.
