Abstract
The problem of thermal stresses in sandwich plates is investigated using an elasticity approach. Interlayer shear stress is introduced in the analysis. Numerical methods, such as the finite element method, are also used for the same purpose. The stiffness matrix of an orthotropic finite element is derived and used for numerical results. Both analytical and numerical results are in good agreement. To facilitate the application of the present analytic solution, simple formulas are derived to calculate the maximum normal stress in facings and interlayer shear in sandwich plates subjected to temperature changes.
