Abstract

Treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater by activated sludge process is one of the most popular methods due to its flexibility and efficiency. Sludge bulking is a serious problem encountered in the activated sludge process when the filamentous microorganisms become the dominant species. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of reactor compartmentalization on filamentous growth. The experiments demonstrated that a plug-flow reactor is capable of controlling sludge bulking by producing a substrate gradient along the reactor.
