Abstract

The widening of the Mittelland canal, north of Hannover, has involved several construction operations. The soils are of Upper Cretaceous age and are very stiff and hard. They were found to exhibit different degrees of swelling in vertical and horizontal directions upon contact with water. In order to fully understand their behaviour, saturation, load and deformation conditions were studied for undisturbed specimens. In addition, the earth-pressure coefficient (K) for overconsolidated soils was determined using the Skempton method-J.M.H.
