Abstract
Focuses on the urban renewal process in the Alma-Gare district of the northern French industrial city of Roubaix, which has been notable for the direct participation of the pre-existing community in the redevelopment process. The background of the physical and social fabric, renewal and community organization is first sketched, followed by a full discussion of the planning and architectural design process. Finally, illustrates the importance placed upon the social meaning of space in the redevelopment process by comparing Alma-Gare's experience with Brinkman's perimeter housing block in Spangen (Rotterdam) and Charles Fourier's utopian phalanstery proposal.-R.House
