Abstract
The intent of this paper is to develop the mathematical techniques necessary to model the BOD-DO interactions in a fresh water stream. The restrictions placed on the models are that they be developed for only steady-state conditions assuming that the concentrations of DO, BOD, and flow rate are time invariant at all points of x along the river stretch. Many of the interactions occurring between BOD and DO in the stretch are microorganism-induced, and every effort is made to incorporate these phenomena in the models. This chapter is concerned with water quality in streams; the quality of the water after it receives natural and man-made discharges. This means that the concern is with the spacial and temporal distributions of various pollutants and contaminants and their effect on the quality of the receiving water.
