Abstract
Water treatment sludge is produced in large quantities in water treatment plants during the process of chemical coagulation and lime-soda softening. Historically, water treatment plant sludge disposal has been neglected as being a problem of secondary importance. Current economic and environmental concerns have brought it to attention. Because of the high cost of sludge disposal, it is essential that sludge volume be reduced by various concentrating and dewatering methods before disposal. The ultimate sludge disposal methods consist of discharging into a receiving stream, co-disposal with another waste, use as a soil conditioner, disposal to a sewerage system, and landfilling. The purpose of this paper is to find an alternate method for disposing of this sludge.
