Abstract

The electrical method was used to characterize the electrical anisotropy, shape and cementation of fine grained soils. It was found that for normally consolidated soils there is a strong dependence of fabric anisotropy on the in situ coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest (Ko). The in situ coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest also depends on fabric friction. A correlation is established between Ko and electrical index which reflects the strong dependence of fabric anisotropy and fabric friction. It was found that there is a reasonable agreement between the predicted Ko value from the electrical index and the measured Ko value for several soils with consolidation pressures above 68 KPa.
