Abstract

Due to insufficient rainfall and related runoff during the spring of 1985, the Passaic and Hackensack River Basins in northern New Jersey and related storage reservoirs therein were able to refill only to 78 percent of capacity by early July as compared to an historical average of 92 percent. The authors, who previously had developed daily flow simulation models for the river basins, were requested to technically analyze, within a short time frame, the potential for impact in relaxing the water restrictions. Based on analyses described in this paper, the authors were able to recommend relaxation of the water restrictions subject to a continued monitoring program through both the summer of 1985 and during the refill period into 1986.
