Abstract
One approach to increasing the representation of blacks and Hispanics in engineering is to encourage minority students to take appropriate science and mathematics courses in high school. Many inner-city schools are not able to provide the needed courses, motivation and career counseling, and it is becoming clear that high school may be too late for such steps to be effective. For two years, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) provided an engineering/science outreach program designed to enrich the science experiences of fifth and sixth graders and encourage them to aspire to careers in scientific and technological fields.
