Abstract
There is a huge incentive to treat power plant flyash as a useful by-product rather than a waste material. About 70 percent of the solid waste derived from the combustion of coal is flyash and increased reliance on coal combustion will produce significant flyash storage and disposal problems. Flyash is currently used as a low-cost construction material and for landifll cover, but additional cost-effective uses for this inexpensive material are desired. The author discusses the use of flyash as an additive to concrete, as a material for plant growth, as a potential source of mineral recovery, and as a material for wastewater treatment.
