Abstract
In considering specific monitoring techniques it is important to take into account the reliability, durability, and ruggedness of the complete system. Reliability of the measurement is determined by factors such as specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy. Depending upon the desired frequency of data, available manpower, and accessibility, one may also desire the capability of unattended operation for extended periods. The article discusses measurement techniques and instruments, including flame ionization, gas chromatography, concentration measurement methods, continuous methods, and others.
