Abstract
Package plants are so classed because they are usually self-contained units preassembled at a vendor's or supplier's plant and can be shipped to a site intact or as modules for easy field assembly. Purposes and advantages for use of package and/or mobile treatment systems include factors such as: intermittent/non-continuous/one-time waste treatment requirements; waste volume loads insufficient or small enough to justify efficiency of scale of small or mobile units; advantages to packaged units that may be modularly expanded according to need; necessity in first trying new/experimental/or speculative treatment technology or prove a particular application; economic advantages in capital/operating costs. Preengineered and commercially available package treatment systems and processes in many alternatives are also available to service waste disposal requirements. This article discusses available treatment systems, secondary and tertiary treatment, space requirements and mobility costs, new technology, thermal treatment developments, and other aspects of the subject.
