Abstract
Personal protective clothing and equipment serve the function of shielding or isolating individuals from chemical/physical/biological hazards that may be encountered in an environment under a wide range of conditions. Use of personal protective equipment is required by OSHA regulations in 29CFR Part 1910 and reinforced by EPA regulations in 40CFR Part 300. All private contractors working on Superfund sites must conform to applicable OSHA provisions and other federal and state safety requirements deemed necessary by the lead agency overseeing the activities. This article discusses respiratory hazards, general respirator classifications, respirator inspection, cleaning, maintenance and storage, and other aspects of the subject.
