Abstract

This research was aimed at preparing a low viscosity and curable liquid polycyclopentadiene (PCPD) so that it can be used as a polymeric binder for engineering composites. Based on experimental evidence, it is concluded that (1) the mechanism of thermal polymerization of cyclopentadiene is through Diels-Alder reaction, (2) the prepolymer is curable with maleic anhydride, and (3) the success in application of the prepolymer to formulate solid propellant that has a solid loading of 90% (due to the low viscosity of the polymer PCPD) implies that the polymer has a great potential to be used as a polymeric binder for other engineering composites.
