Abstract
The response of typical highway bridges to the vertical component of earthquake ground motion has a significant effect on their elastic behavior. When vertical motions are considered along with horizontal excitation, significantly more damage may accumulate at the base of the piers, larger shear forces may occur in the piers and in the abutments, the shear capacity of the pier will diminish due to tension forces and larger forces in the pier foundation and in the abutment will occur.
