Figure 1.16: Gray codes: (a) 1-bit Gray code; (b) Reflecting the 1-bit code; (c) Adding leading bit to produce the 2-bit Gray code; (d) 3-bit Gray code. First we start with a 1-bit code, which has two values, 0 and 1. Then we take this code and reflect it, producing 0, 1, 1, 0. We place a 0 in front of the original values and a 1 in front of the two reflected values. This yields the values 00, 01, 11, 10. Then we repeat this process on these values to get 000, 001, 011, 010, 110, 111, 101, 100.
