Abstract
Millimeter-wave propagation in vegetation (forests) is studied using transport theory. A periodic sequence of gaussian plane wave pulses is assumed to enter a forest. The forest is first modeled as a slab and then treated as a half-space by letting the thickness of the slab go to infinity. The forest is assumed to consist of a random distribution of particles which scatters energy isotropically. The time dependent equation of radiative transfer in such a scattering and absorbing medium is solved by using Chebyshev polynomials as basis functions for series expansions of the diffuse or incoherent intensity. This choice of basis functions simplified considerably the systems of linear equations which had to be solved numerically. The fourier transformed equation for this time dependent problem were found to be similar to those equations which had been encountered in a previous study using the tine independent transport equation. Curves of incoherent intensity and power flux density versus time are drawn at various penetration depths in the forest. Scattered pulses of longer time periods were found to be less distorted than shorter ones. Incoherent intensities in the same direction as the incident wave train were found to display a periodic behavior. Data obtained using the above method was shown to agree very accurately with results obtained using the purely numerical procedure known as the Method of Moments.
