Abstract

The use of fiber optics for the transmission of microwave signals had its beginnings in 1984. Applications were limited to the lower microwave frequency regions. Technology in this field is advancing rapidly due to the high demand driven by the telecommunications community for high speed digital applications. Extensive research and development efforts are underway by both the component manufacturers and the subsystem end user. Most of the near term applications of microwaves in fiber optics are in weapon systems and communication systems for military and other government agencies.

The high frequency modulation characteristics of Lytel's InGaAsP 1300 nm buried heterostructure laser diode is investigated in this thesis. Also included is the system performance of a fiber optic link composed of Lytel components.
