Abstract

The scope of this thesis is to study the strategic and long term planning in Management Information Systems. How can it be better satisfied to support the multinational business environment. A growing number of corporations are using computer-based information systems to manage their global businesses, the growing penetration of mini-and micro computers in the office and administrative environment, have created more attention on the need for a comprehensive and integrated planning in MIS.

Planning should be made from its time horizon and from its focus. It concentrates on the long-range conceptual planning, medium-range managerial planning, and short-range operational planning. They will be discussed in the following chapter. Five growth phases to the Information System are discussed in the thesis. They are start up, growth, control, planning, and strategic planning.

The increasing important need for teamwork and an organized approach to systems definition and installation efforts are also discussed here. The major reasons why a system is needed are that nobody knows everything. A team of people from varied backgrounds help to supplement the experience and judgement of the systems designer.

There is a tendency for managers to understand the importance of information systems and development of improved systems. The effective managers are adequately talented, trained, and motivated to perform responsibilities well. The priorities of an effective manager will be discussed in this study.

Due to the complexity of the modern multinational enterprise and its environment, setting strategic multinational information management functions ( MNIRM ) objectives and achieving them is extremely important. The difference between the domestic and international MNIRM Environment should be clearly distinguished. Finally, the critical MNIRM planning success factors will be discussed in the thesis.
