Abstract

Many of the modern industrial and commercial processes utilized by our society involve the application of organic solvents (Verschueren, 1983). Through the transport, storage, transfer, and use of these materials, releases can occur to the atmosphere. In addition, the use of liquid fuels by motor vehicles can also result in evaporative and tailpipe losses of organic substances to the air environment (NAS, 1981). A significant quantity of the organic materials emitted into the atmosphere as solvents or through the use of liquid fuels can be classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the present context, VOCs are defined as organic substances with a vapor pressure greater than or equal to 0.02 psi.
