Abstract
In the twenty-first century, criminal investigation has reached a point where increased sophistication is needed to ensure proper deliverance of justice. Due to this, there is involvement of many branches of sciences in crime detection. Lately, nanotechnology and taggant technology have found potential use in forensic science. Nanotechnology is the science and technology of miniaturization, while taggant technology involves coding and marking of materials. Nanotechnology is a diverse field of science and hence, the applications are also equally diverse. Ranging from conventional physics to completely new approach of developing new materials at nanoscale, nanotechnology can be applied in almost all the field of science and technology. It has also excelled in the area of forensic science, making investigation and criminal seizing a much easier task. Similarly, taggant technology is the technology that deals with core forensics and is used for the prevention and monitoring of dangerous crimes, by associating an object with a piece of information. This chapter will further discuss about the recent studies on how nanotechnology and taggant technology have made advancements in forensic investigation. The outline of recent research involves the use of different types of nanomaterials and advanced properties of nanomaterials in crime scene investigation. Also, further discussion has been done regarding the different types of taggants used in forensics with their special characteristics and applications in forensic department.
