Abstract

Any criminal investigation begins with evidence collection and analysis. A lot of this evidence relies on the biological signatures left on it by the personnel who were present when the crime was committed. These biological signatures are mainly body fluids like blood, semen, saliva, urine, and sweat. The DNA analysis of such fluids can provide the identity of the origin of the fluid, which can be vital in solving any case. Identity of the fluid can also be significant evidence in cases where just confirmation of the presence of particular body fluid is required. This analysis, however, takes a lot of time and resources while also requiring transport of the sample to the laboratory that can be avoided by the use of portable sensing devices. Thus, sensors for detection of biological fluid have been of great importance in the field of forensics. Several approaches have been used to tackle the challenges in conducting qualitative analysis of biological samples from crime scene, but it is still a developing field and suffers from lack of research thrust. The scope of this chapter is to inform about different commercially available biosensors while also elaborating over recent developments in this field.
