Abstract
In recent years, various technologies have been developed for the investigation in forensics, which have provided forensic scientists with new analytical techniques. Chromatography is one of them, which is used for the investigation purposes. There are various techniques of chromatography such as gas chromatography (GC), paper chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and thin layer chromatography (TLC). Various types of samples such as hair, drugs, explosives, toxins, fingerprints, documents, gunshot residues, and inks can be analyzed and detected using chromatography. Chromatography is one of the cheapest techniques that provides accurate results. Also, it is easy to operate, making it one of the most adaptable and abundant technique as well. This chapter discusses about the classification of chromatography on the basis of three different criteria. The various disadvantages and advantages of one technique over the other and why is it used over the previous one have also been discussed. Discussion about different types of HPLC is also done in this chapter. Furthermore, this chapter also discusses about the working principles and the significances of these techniques and their relevance in forensic investigations.
