Abstract
The rapidly growing numbers of the smartphone users (~ 3.5 billion in 2020) drives the fast advancements of the smartphones and their integrated parts into other analytical systems for the design and fabrication of next-generation imaging, sensing, diagnostics and measurement platforms. The high number of smartphone users gradually drives the fast advancements of the software, hardware, imaging and sensor technologies integrated into the smartphones, transforming the smartphone technology into a low-cost and effective tools to conduct many processes such as biomedical tests and carry out scientific measurements which would normally need quite expensive and advanced instruments in the laboratories. In this chapter, we present the various successful applications, future perspectives and challenges of the smartphones and their combination with the other analytical systems for the design and fabrication of novel miniaturized devices for sensing, diagnostic, imaging systems.
