Abstract

The computer hardware and software technology applicable to CAD/CAM has advanced to such a degree in the last few years that the ability to draw complex geometries in space, section the part to view the cross section or view the part from any position are readily available. Color monitors and solid body graphics can be added as an option. The technology of numerically controlled machinery presently enables the mold maker to convert the three dimensional drawing into a series of machining operations to make extremely precise parts to build his mold. However, the technology related to predicting the response of a plastics member to an arbitrary load history as well as the characterization of resins in the molten state is extremely poor to say the least. The present state of the data banks is that the ultimate advantages or benefits of CAD/CAM applied to the injection molding process cannot be implemented. For the reader to better understand the magnitude of the problem that is facing the molding industry, a short historical overview of the development of the present data bases has been prepared.
