Abstract

A system was designed to simultaneously obtain both electrocardiogram and respiratory data from a patient and send them over a telephone line to a receiver where the two signals are separated and made available for analysis. Both sets of data are obtained through the same set of electrodes. The respiratory data are obtained. by measuring the transthoracic impedance between two electrodes on the body surface using a low-intensity, high-frequency constant current source applied through two different electrodes. The electrocardiogram and respiratory signal are each used to FM modulate a subcarrier which then FM modulates a carrier. The resulting signal is sent over a telephone line to a receiver where first the subcarriers and then the data signals are demodulated.
