Abstract

A system has been designed and developed at NJIT that will facilitate the use of hierarchical and relational databases. This project is part of a research program in the computer & information science department to address the needs of scientists and engineers. Those users, though technically sophisticated in their own fields, often do not take advantage of computer science principles and techniques because they are unfamiliar or inconvenient to use. With our system, special data definition and query languages and a menu-driven interactive design give the scientist user-friendly access to the data model most appropriate to the particular experiment or calculation being done. An interface to library functions allows the user to perform calculations on the portion of the database specified with the query language. Details on the file structure, command interpreter, and other design features will be given. Data on renewable energy sources will be used to demonstrate how this system works.
