Abstract

Mechanical Testing of new joint protheses designs under simulated loading, motion, and environmental conditions is an essential component of the development of these devices. A machine for such testing must provide a reasonable simulation of physiological conditions with sufficient reliability to allow tens of millions of test cycles without major test interruption or constant monitoring and be programmable to allow various physiologically important loading and motion conditions. The New Jersey joint simulator is such a four station test machine with five basic systems which are: a hydraulic power system, a fluctuating load system, an articular motion system, variable test cell configuration capability, and a lubrication system. The simulator performed without breakdown and provided a means for high cycle fatigue and wear data.
