Abstract

This paper describes a study completed by the author in May 1983 in which the achievement of 32 Fachhochschulen students who received Fulbright scholarship to attend New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in the United States over a period of 11 years (1972-83) was examined in detail. The study was designed to evaluate their level of academic performance, and also to make a comparison of the German Fachhochschulen and American educational systems in the categories of technical and graduate engineering work. The paper demonstrates, through discussion of the survey results, that the Fulbright study experience at this U. S. technological university continues to be a rewarding one, in terms of career goals and prestige, in the United States and in the Federal Republic of Germany.
